pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index Released

(12 June, 2012)

The pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index (CEDEX) is the new benchmark indicator for Australia's carbon emissions from the energy sectors.

  • In the March quarter of 2012, Australia's energy related emissions showed continued growth, driven, as for the past two years, by growth in consumption of petroleum fuels. Annualised emissions from electricity generation were virtually unchanged over the quarter (Figure 1).
  • Demand for electricity in the National Electricity Market (NEM) continues to fall and is now at its lowest annualised level since late 2006 (Figure 2).
  • Demand for gas by final users, i.e. excluding electricity generators, in eastern Australia has also fallen more or less steadily for three years, and this trend continues (Figure 5).
  • Changes in the mix of electricity generation — more brown coal, less black coal and slightly less gas and renewables (Figure 3) — combined with the decrease in generation, have resulted in a small increase in the emissions intensity of electricity supplied to the NEM.
  • Annualised emissions from the consumption of petroleum fuels continue the increasing trend since August 2009, with growth in demand for bulk diesel accelerating further (Figure 4). By contrast, growth in demand for aviation fuels, and for petrol and other retail fuels, may be starting to moderate.

Sustainable Thinking

The world is moving rapidly towards a position of determining initiatives on the basis of their capacity to contribute to sustainable objectives. We believe this shift in global value systems is permanent and gaining momentum, with sufficient magnitude to require a proportionate response from pitt&sherry. Find Out More
