pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index Released

The pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index (CEDEX) is the new benchmark indicator for Australia's carbon emissions from the energy sectors.

pitt&sherry's Principal Consultant - Climate Change in Canberra, Dr Hugh Saddler, compiles the Index.

Dr Saddler said that the pitt&sherry CEDEX is designed to provide an early indication of key greenhouse gas emission trends in Australia.

The key findings in the December 2009 pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index include:

Greenhouse gas emissions from energy consumption for the year to December 2009 fell again. This is the sixth successive month that annualised emissions from the consumption of electricity and petroleum fuels have fallen.

This fall was attributable to the reduction in emissions from electricity generation. Emissions from the use of petroleum fuels increased slightly.

Generation (and therefore consumption) of electricity again increased, continuing the trend of previous months.

Electricity consumption increased but emissions from electricity generation fell. This was because the share of electricity supplied by gas fired and renewable generators increased significantly, while the share of black coal generators continued to decrease.

As a result of these changes, the overall emissions intensity of the eastern States’ electricity supply reached its lowest value for nearly a year and a half.

Consumption of retail transport fuels continued the steady increase seen for nearly a year, while the decline in bulk diesel consumption appears to have ended. Aviation fuel consumption continues to increase.

Released on a monthly basis on the Sky News Eco Report, a full version of the pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index, and associated updated graphs, are available by visiting www.pittsh.com.au/cedex.

pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index Released

The pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index (CEDEX) is the new benchmark indicator for Australia's carbon emissions from the energy sectors.

pitt&sherry's Principal Consultant - Climate Change in Canberra, Dr Hugh Saddler, compiles the Index.

Dr Saddler said that the pitt&sherry CEDEX is designed to provide an early indication of key greenhouse gas emission trends in Australia.

The key findings of the November 2009 pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index include:

Annualised Greenhouse emissions from energy consumption in Australia for the year to November 2009 were virtually unchanged from one month earlier, amounting to a break with the declining trend seen over preceding months.

Emissions from both electricity generation and petroleum fuel consumption were almost unchanged.

Generation (and therefore consumption) of electricity increasedquite sharply; this is suggestive of an increase in economic activity in November 2009, compared with the same period one year earlier.

While electricity consumption increased, emissions from electricity generation stayed almost unchanged, because the share of electricity supplied by gas fired and renewable generators increased significantly, while the share of black coal generators continued to decrease.

This "greening of the grid" is precisely the sort of change, which will be required for Australia to achieve sustained reductions in emissions, and which a policy instrument, such as the CPRS, which places a cost on emissions is expected to encourage.

Turning to petroleum fuels, consumption of retail transport fuels continued the steady increase seen for nearly a year, while the decline in bulk diesel consumption came almost to an end. Aviation fuel consumption again increased very slightly.
