pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index Released

The pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index (CEDEX) is the new benchmark indicator for Australia's carbon emissions from the energy sectors.

Data analysis, text and graphs are provided by Dr Hugh Saddler and Graham Anderson from pitt&sherry's Climate Change group in Canberra.

Dr Saddler said that the pitt&sherry CEDEX is designed to provide an early indication of key greenhouse gas emission trends in Australia.

The key findings in the April 2010 pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index include:

Annualised greenhouse gas emissions from energy consumption in Australia continue to fall. Combined electricity and petroleum fuel emissions show a sixteen-month downward trend.

The decrease is largely attributable to lower emissions from electricity generation.

Annualised emissions from petroleum fuel have been increasing since January this year.

Electricity demand for the year to April shows a small increase since last month continuing the upward trend seen since September 2009.

Electricity generation from hydro and wind contribute 5.7% and 2.4% of the annual eastern states electricity supply respectively.

Annualised electricity demand is almost back to the same level as it was prior to the onset of the financial crisis.

Emissions from electricity generation continue to fall.

The long term decrease in black coal generation was accompanied by a small decrease in brown coal generation.

Increased electricity demand was met by an increase in the share of gas and renewable generation.

Annual emissions from electricity generation in eastern Australia are now more than 5.5 million tonnes lower than their June 2009 peak.

Emissions from consumption of petroleum fuels are on the increase. The rise in consumption is across road transport, bulk diesel and aviation fuels.

Released on a monthly basis, a full version of the pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index, and associated updated graphs, are available by visiting www.pittsh.com.au/cedex.

ClimateAsyst Launched

pitt&sherry has launched its software tool, ClimateAsyst®, that will help infrastructure owners, engineers and managers analyse the affect that changing climate variables will have on infrastructure. ClimateAsyst® was developed in partnership with the Antarctic Climate Change & Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE CRC), with the support from various infrastructure owners.

ClimateAsyst® combines research into thresholds of vulnerability of various infrastructure components with climate change modelling of forecast occurrence of these thresholds under various future climate scenarios. The geographic presentation of the future climate threshold scenarios enables infrastructure owners to easily identify vulnerable infrastructure.

ClimateAsyst® Capability Statement

View on our products page

pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index Released

The pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index (CEDEX) is the new benchmark indicator for Australia's carbon emissions from the energy sectors.

pitt&sherry's Principal Consultant - Climate Change in Canberra, Dr Hugh Saddler, compiles the Index.

Dr Saddler said that the pitt&sherry CEDEX is designed to provide an early indication of key greenhouse gas emission trends in Australia.

The key findings in the February 2010 pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index include:

Annualised greenhouse gas emissions from the consumption of electricity and petroleum fuels have been on a downward trend since December 2008.

Renewable energy supplied nearly 8% of eastern states electricity demand for the year to February (5.6% hydro, 2.3% wind).

The contribution from renewable generation has increased by more than 2% since November 2008.

Gas generation supplied more than 9% of eastern states electricity demand in 2009, black coal supplied 58%, brown coal 25%.

Black coal fired generation has decreased by nearly 6% since October 2008.

While results suggest that the Australian economy may be becoming less emissions intensive, mainly through "greening of the grid", it is not clear that the economy is becoming less electricity intensive.

Annual emissions from electricity generation in the eastern states are now more than 5.5 million tonnes lower than they were at their June 2008 peak.

Released on a monthly basis on the Sky News Eco Report, a full version of the pitt&sherry Carbon Emissions Index, and associated updated graphs, are available by visiting www.pittsh.com.au/cedex.
