pitt&sherry supports NAIDOC Week

Each year #NAIDOCWeek is a time for all Australians to recognise and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Normally held in July, and delayed because of COVID-19, this year’s celebrations are occurring November 8 – 15 2020.

The 2020 theme Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this country for over 65,000 years. As the oldest continuing cultures on the planet, NAIDOC Week recognises that the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is Australian history.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.

pitt&sherry marked NAIDOC Week with an internal event. We heard about the importance of oral storytelling and the significance of our RAP artwork “Together” by Hayden Wood.  Our staff shared the traditional country that they’re on, as well as resources for their colleagues interested in learning more.

Jessica Jackson spoke about pitt&sherry’s Reconciliation Action Plan and we heard from Joel Williams, NAIDOC spokesperson and Assistant Aboriginal Heritage Advisor at Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania. In a pre-recorded message he spoke about his experiences as a young Gangulu, Darumbal and Pakana man.

Joel perfectly summed up the importance of celebrating NAIDOC Week, stating;

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage isn’t just for First Nations people. It’s for all Australian people.”
