Beaconsfield Gold Mine Wetlands Validation Assessment

Beaconsfield Gold Mine Wetlands Validation Assessment

pitt&sherry’s contaminated land team completed the final validation sampling and reporting for the Beaconsfield Gold Mine wetlands area, confirming the site had been appropriately remediated so that no unacceptable level of risk remains and the next phase of the rehabilitation plan could progress.

Background

Following Tasmanian Gold Pty Ltd acquisition of the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in 2022, the company has undertaken several rounds of remediation and validation works to address legacy contamination issues within the wetlands area.

In support of these efforts, pitt&sherry’s contaminated land team was engaged to complete the validation sampling and reporting for the wetlands area, in accordance with the regulatory requirements and deliverables set by EPA Tasmania and MRT. The works comprised sampling and assessment of the analytical results, guiding any additional remediation required until the validation results demonstrated no residual risks remained onsite.

Project aim

The objectives of the validation assessment report were to:

  • Meet MRT requirements by documenting the previous and more recent remediation works completed as part of the wetlands’ rehabilitation; and assessing (from a land contamination perspective) whether the wetlands area has been remediated to an acceptable level, to allow for the next stages of the wetlands rehabilitation program to be progressed.
  • Propose any measures applicable for the monitoring and management of any residual risks associated with any material remaining within the wetlands area.

What we did

The scope of works for the wetland's validation assessment included:

  • Compilation of site historical information and gap analysis of sampling works completed to date
  • Intrusive site investigation including soil sampling and testing by NATA-accredited Laboratories
  • Guidance for clean-up activities and identification of areas with residual contamination requiring further remediation and re-sampling
  • Preparation of a report summarising the investigations, presenting results, and compiling figures and tables; assessment of results against applicable criteria; and provision of conclusions and recommendations.

Outcomes

The validation assessment concluded that the wetlands area at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine has been remediated to an acceptable level, allowing the next stages of rehabilitation to proceed.

The report:

  • Satisfied MRT requirements  and rehabilitation schedule; and
  • Supports the progression to final ground profiling, revegetation and site closure activities.
